The Coronation Of The Virgin - 1513 Words
Dated circa 1515, The Coronation of the Virgin is the earliest known altarpiece by Bartholomà ¤us Bruyn the Elder German, 1493ââ¬â1555, who was a contemporary of Lucas Cranach and Hans Holbein, and the foremost painter in Cologne in the sixteenth century. It is one of the few German Renaissance altarpieces that still have the side panels intact. Although it has a later frame, Linda Muehlig, associate director of curatorial affairs at Smith College Museum of Art, affirms that, ââ¬Å"a technical analysis of the wood of the side panels showed that they were cut from the same tree as the center panel, refuting the theory that they might have been added later.â⬠(SCMA) In this work, Bruyn unifies late Gothic tradition with northern Renaissance elements, creating a unique style. The work is a three-panel altarpiece, painted in oil on oak wood panels. The large central panel of the triptych shows the Virgin Mary being crowned by the whole Christian Trinity, known as the One who is Three. Christ wears a red robe and holds a scepter. His calmness suggests that the pain of the body does not affect him on the spirit. According to the bible, ââ¬Å"This shining did not conceal but rather revealed the more those wounds upon His hands and feet which cruel men had inflicted and His brow still bore the marks of barbed thornsâ⬠(Revelation 12:1). His face is a younger version of God the Father, who holds a globus cruciger, and dresses a heavy crown along with a richly brocaded and jeweled robe like a king.Show MoreRelatedFra Angelicoââ¬â¢s Coronation of the Virgin: Art Use during the Renaissance: 1344 Words à |à 6 Pagessetting the stage for distinct and innovative art styles and ideas. As we come to know these girls better, they emerge as well-rounded individuals full of unexpected laughter and insight. One chilling element the film uncovers is a videotape confiscated by police of two pimps recording their activities with the intent of making a reality television show. Later Lloyd gets recognized for her work at a human rights awards ceremony. Sociologically gender role refers to the characteristics as well as behaviors that different cultures attribute to the sexes Prince (2005). What it means to be a real man in any culture requires male sex plus what our various cultures define as masculine characteristics and behaviors, likewise a real woman needs female sex and feminine characteristics. Sex industry A number of women earn part or all their living as sex workers. The sex industry includes pornography, nude dancing, telephone sex, as well as computer pornography. Contrary to the ugly stereotypes of prostitutes as fallen women, dope addicts, or disease carriers, sex workers are women at worksupporting children as single parents, trying to save money to go to school, surviving economically in a job market that underpays women at every economic level. As adult sex workers speak out, they expose the many forms of violence that they experience: Poverty that forces women, especially women of color and runaway teenagers, into work as sex workers Sexism in the job market that means that even middle- and upper-class women can earn more in sex work than in most other jobs available Intimidation and beatings by pimps, to whom many sex workers must give their earnings in return for protection, Police harassment and lack of police protection when they are victims of crime such as robbery, battery, and rape, The arrest and prosecution of prostitutes while clients go free (Willis, 2010). The racism and class bias that lead to the arrest and imprisonment of far more prostitutes of colour and women with low incomes than white, middle-class women, even though the majority of sex workers are white and middle-class are the challenges this women face day in day out. Very young girls takes us through a face of this challenges faced by the young women. The film is a reflection of the modern society. The victim has no one to turn to the people who are supposed to help her treat her like a criminal. The girls are left to live in fear and terror some of them do not even survive the ordeals while others end up hating the opposite sex all through their lives. Sexual exploitation refers to the exchange of money, drugs, food or shelter for sexual activities, especially with children or youths under the age of eighteen. Drug use is linked to sexual exploitation in a number of ways. To begin with, many persons who are exploited are sexually assaulted, raped and abused when under the influence of drugs Carlson (2010). Again, many people become involved in the sex industry to finance their drug addiction and often trade their body for drugs. Lastly, human and drug trafficking are often linked, and through threats of violence and promises of freedom. This is never considered prostitution or consensual. Some youth feel they are not being exploited, and that they have chosen to exchange sexual acts for resources. But sexual exploitation is not employment nor is it a chosen occupation; it is a form of sexual abuse. Prostitution and Substance Abuse Drugs are basically related to prostitution, especially street prostitution. Estimates suggest that between 40 and 85 per cent of the prostitutes are drug users (Carlson, 2010). Many prostitutes, men and women, engage in this behavior to support their drug habits and are often the victim of sexual exploitation, violent crimes, rapes, assaults and other serious crimes but these are very often unreported crimes. In some cases, an individual begins to prostitute herself as a way to finance a drug habit. In other cases, a third person may be forcing a person to work on the street or in a brothel to make money. Drug use may be a consequence of the life that a prostitute leads and drugs may be taken to numb themselves, deal with the reality of their life and as a way to be able to get on the street and continue to do the degrading and often violent work. In some cases, a prostitute will be forced by a pimp or other person to take drugs to ensure that they do as they are told and have sex with people. This is particularly true in the case of young people and children. Sex Trafficking Sex trafficking is the act whereby a person is induced by force, fraud or coercion to perform a sexual act (Kotrla, 2009). Sex trafficking often involves a person being promised a job in another country, being sold by a family member to a third part, a false marriage proposal or a kidnapping situation then made to work as a prostitute or perform sexual acts as a payment. Women and girls are the most commonly trafficked people for this purpose. Sex traffickers will use a variety of ways to make a person conform to their demands. Rape, physical abuse, starvation, violence, drugs, gang-rape and guilt are used to break a person and shame a victim into the life of a sexual slave or a prostitute. Drugs such as heroin and methamphetamine are commonly used to make a person become an addict and force them to do the work the traffickers want them to do. Conclusion Each person can have different reactions to victimization. Trauma is the term that describes both the physical and emotional reactions to a traumatic event. Common symptoms of trauma include reviewing parts of the crime over and over in oneââ¬â¢s mind, mood swings, shaken sense of personal safety, heightened sense of smell or hearing, emotional detachment, disassociation, and so on. Symptoms associated with trauma may take several weeks to subside. Under the fear and pain of withdrawals or while they are high on the drugs, many of the victims of exploitation will do acts they would otherwise not ever consider doing. They may also find it near impossible to leave the grasp of the abusers or traffickers and return home to families and friends. Getting help from the police or health workers is often difficult because of the illegality of the lifestyle they have been forced into and attending rehabilitation or detoxification may be beyond their grasp due to associated poverty. Many of the victims of exploitation will suffer from anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems as a result of the crimes they have been involved in. Resolving these issues at the same time as overcoming a substance abuse problem may be difficult, but with appropriate care and training, recovery is possible. The girls, who are maturing physically, but remain emotional infants, are desperately in need of some guidance. Rachel Lloyd, who is the filmââ¬â¢s central character, has dedicated her life to give them this helps. Lloydââ¬â¢s personal background was troubled born in the UK she dropped out of school and fled to Munich, here she worked as a teenage stripper as well as hooker and later she transferred her trade to New York York, she eventually changed her act. She began to help young girls as well as women who find themselves in the similar situation. Underneath its broad ideological implications, though, this film is intensely humanistic, concerned less with commoditized bodies than with people for whom normal life is a beautiful if distant dream. Itââ¬â¢s great that the film brings the plight of the young girls to light as well as the fact that it refrains from inflicting any given amount of neither blame nor shame on the girls. However the film ought and should have taken a stronger backing role by pointing out just where as well as how the social system falls apart in the providing the children any form of safety as well as fails to punish those who take part in the abuse as well as exploit the young stars in such a way that they become a lesson to other predators. This would make very young girls a stronger as well as more effective film and would help pass on the efforts and message of Rachel Lloyd. In additional the authority must make a serious effort to enforce the article 34 of the international convention of child ri ghts, stating that ââ¬Å"states must protect the children from all forms of sexual exploitation as well as sexual violence.â⬠References Kotrla, K. Graduation speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Graduation speech - Essay Example It is indeed unavoidable and pleasing to see how we all gained skills over that period we were in school. I invite you to look back to our first day in campus: we were the same but distinct; we were shorter, young and probably uncertain about ourselves. Similar to almost everyone, I arrived at this university anxious and wide-eyed. I also felt endangered by fittings on the compass with loud voices and opinions, and wondered I would cope and survive. As we look back this day on a journey, a journey that commenced with tentative and hesitant steps, we just observe how far we all have advanced. It was a privilege to be part of this journey and this institution. To my wonderful tutors, I would like to salute each and every one of you. You all guided, shaped and molded not only me, but also all the ladies and gentlemen standing here today. Your role has been immensely contributory in molding us. Though your painstaking efforts may waste away or be forgotten. We will always recall all of you for helping us, caring for us, and making us feel special and appreciated for all the time you spend teaching us. It is the excellent coaching styles that have assisted us to enormously accomplish our journey at the University. Indeed, school would have been challenging. I am undeniably grateful for your advice, guidance, and tutelage. I greatly appreciate your generosity and commitment with your time to help me with my studies and projects. I am grateful for believing in me and allowing me to continue believing in myself. I hope to emulate the goodwill and kindness that you all have shown us in our journey through the university. To my beloved husband and family, I am here as a testimony of your love, reassurance and support. You held my hand and supported me through my decisions to complete my undergraduate studies. Surely, I would not have lived to see this day without your support and flexibility. Your support during this

SAME SEX MARRIGE Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
SAME SEX MARRIGE - Research Paper Example f same-sex marriage, and whereas there are people who say they should be legalized and rely upon the equal rights for everyone, including gay persons, there are also those who find a lot of arguments against the legalization of homosexual marriages. Mostly those opposing the same-sex marriages claim that the gay people are normally not in the habit to be faithful to each other. However this can hardly serve as a reasonable and sound argument as not all hererosexuals are faithful and devoted husbands and wives. Taking into account that there are multiple benefits (social and emotional) for people who get married, it becomes clear that it would be unfair to deprive gays and lesbians of their right to get married only on the ground of their sexual orientation. In fact, in many countries of the world and some states of America homosexual marriages have already been legalized. So it seems that soon the gay people all over the world will get the right to get married to their partners. There are still, of course, some burning issues that are being argued about and discussed, such as adopting and bringing up children in homosexual families, however even these are being solved now in many world countries basing upon the presupposition of equal rights and equal opportunities for every human being. How can marriage be defined? Marriage is the unity of two people who live together, and this unity should be acknowledged by the society. Such factors as having children, loving each other, and even official recognition (for in some places, it is still possible to marry without registration) are not necessary. It is normally taken for granted by the majority of people that marriages are concluded between two people of different sex; however in the course of history there have been plenty of examples of unities of people of the same gender, and these unities had all features of an ââ¬Å"ordinaryâ⬠marriage (Sparta, Ancient Greece, Rome, Ancient China and Japan). If we talk about

International context in marketing and how media theories can be Essay
International context in marketing and how media theories can be apllied to ctreate strong relationship with consumers in the modern market - Essay Example ââ¬ËMarketing is an organizational function for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders. It is a management process of anticipating, identifying and satisfying customer requirements profitably.ââ¬â¢ (Berzins) Globalization has created revolutionary changes in all over the world. Most of the organizational principles have been redefined because of globalization. Most of the organizations believe that globalization has opened up the doors of immense possibilities for them and hence they are spending millions of dollars in finding the right strategies to exploit the possibilities. For a business organization, globalization has created immense opportunities for marketing their products in international market. But for exploiting the possibilities of the modern global market, organizations need to innovate marketing strategies along with the existing ones suitable for different countries. The business world has already developed several types of new marketing techniques like telemarketing, direct marketing, marketing through ads, sensory marketing, etc apart from the conventional marketing activities. Most of the big business tycoons are expanding their activities to overseas countries in order to capitalize the possibilities of globalization. Small or medium scale businesses are suffering because of the immense competition from the MNCs. It is difficult for the small business groups to operate profitably by overcoming the stiff challenges for the corporate. Big organizations always have immense resources, and facilities which they will utilize to monopolize the market. Moreover they have the better equipped Research and Development (R&D) wing to facilitate their operations by providing required data about the changing trends of consumers. The conventional marketing

An analysis of ââ¬ÅThe Fleaââ¬Â by John Donne
An analysis of ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠by John Donne Close Reading This close reading, is an analysis of ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠by John Donne. ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠is a love sonnet that uses a flea as a reason for the writer and the woman to get together. The flea is the main image of the poem, through which all of the metaphors and puns are woven around. When it comes down to it, the poem is about trying to get the woman in the poem into bed. The writer never comes out and just says that he wants to have sex with the woman, but that is exactly what a marriage bed is for. He does not want to scare her off with the blunt truth that having sex with him would be a terrible mistake. This close reading will demonstrate all of this and more by going through the poem line by line looking deeply into what each line is saying and how it is demonstrating it. In the first stanza, Donne uses extended metaphors to get his point across about the flea. The first stanza speaks of how the writer and the woman become one after being bitten by the flea. This stanza begins with ââ¬Å"Mark but this flea, and mark in this,â⬠which directs the attention of the woman towards the flea. He uses an apostrophe by speaking to a person outside the poem who cannot respond. ââ¬Å"How little that which thou deniest me is,â⬠she denies his sexual advances which means little to her. ââ¬Å"It sucked me first, and now sucks thee, And in this flea, our two bloods mingled be,â⬠the flea bites them both causing their blood to mix together inside the flea. Blood is used both literally and figuratively throughout the poem, which makes it a pun. Literally, that flea really does contain two peoples blood. Metaphorically, when two people procreate we call it mixing fluids, and the writer plays with this double meaning. The mixing of the blood cannot be a sin, or shame, or lose of virginity therefore; neither should it be for their other bodily to mix together, ââ¬Å"A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yet this enjoys before it woo,â⬠the pleasure of the flea is a pun. The flea literally enjoys her blood, however to the writer, it also enjoys her in the erotic way like he wants to. ââ¬Å"And pampered swells with one blood made of two,â⬠the flea is lucky to be filled with their blood. This flea becomes larger in size with blood from both subjects. The flea has joined them together already by mixing their blood together which is more than he is asking of the woman, ââ¬Å"And this, alas, is more than we would do.â⬠The writer expresses shame and sadness for this flea. He speaks of the flea like it has sinned in its blood sucking ways which is more than he is asking the woman to do so they should just have sex. The act of the biting flea happens prior to seduction; it accents the completion of gratification prior to the procreative stimulation indicated by woo, pampered,â⬠and ââ¬Å"swells. Hence, the poem changes its gesture of passion and focuses on the sexual pleasure, following a notable order; solicitation, swelling, copulation, then fulfillment. The flea, particularly enjoys the pleasure of sucking both male and female bodies. As a result of, the outburst alas, the writer regretfully indicates the flea can do more than he can do. In the second stanza, the writer asks his woman, ââ¬Å"Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,â⬠as the woman moves in to kill the flea, he asks her to halt from the killing. The writer explains to the woman if she would please reserve the three lives which are now mixed within in the flea. The writer may be concluding that the three lives within the flea represent a father, mother, and baby. He constructs another analogy in this line, ââ¬Å"Where we almost, yea more than married are.â⬠In this he argues, their blood is mixed within the flea therefore they are no more than married. ââ¬Å"This flea is you and I,â⬠the flea has both of their blood inside it. ââ¬Å"Our marriage bed, and marriage temple,â⬠the flea is their sex and religion. Also, their supposed marriage is an extended metaphor which stems from the pun on two kinds of blood: literal blood and family relations. Mixing of bloodlines is what happens when you get married. The writer confesses ââ¬Å"Though parents grudge, and you, wââ¬â¢are met.â⬠In spite of the fact that their parents object is not a reason for them not to have sex. He is suggesting that even though they cannot be in a romantic relationship, it should not affect her decision not to make love, ââ¬Å"And cloistered in these living walls of jet.â⬠Although their parents protest with resentment towards their romance, and she will not make love to him, contained within the flea is a place of religious solitude, where they are united as one. The writer extends the metaphor further by saying neither of their parents would approve of the union. The flea is compared to a church or cloister with black walls, in which the marriage ceremony takes place. Donne writes, ââ¬Å"Though use make you apt to kill me,â⬠even though you are almost certainly going to kill me. ââ¬Å"Let not to that, self-murder added be,â⬠he requests that she not kill the flea because she would be killing herself, the flea, and him. ââ¬Å"And sacrilege, three sin in killing three,â⬠and by killing the writer, the flea, and herself, she will commit three sins of theft and perverting what is sanctified. Since the flea is a temple of religion, should she kill this flea? Returning to the metaphor, the flea contains their lives, the writer alleges her of trying to commit a deadly sin by killing the flea. She would be killing him and committing suicide herself. Furthermore, she would defile the institution of marriage, by killing the marriage temple. In the final stanza, ââ¬Å"Cruel and sudden, hast thou since, the writer calls the woman sadistic and rash in her actions to kill the flea without thinking. The regard to the woman as cruel means she is likely to take pleasure in the fleaââ¬â¢s pain. The writer has redefined the flea. The flea has become a depiction of his own pain which he has endured because of her prohibition of sex. Through her prohibition she has been lacking of affection or sympathy. Alike the flea, she has behaved towards him lacking pause in denying him the gratifications of sex. The writer speaks to the woman through rhetorical questions, ââ¬Å"Purpled thy nail, in blood of innocence,â⬠has she sinned by spilling the blood of the innocent? Has she damned herself to hell by persecuting the flea? Oh, no! She kills the flea, but the magnificent rhetoric about the blood of innocence compares with the insignificance of a dot of blood on her fingernail. ââ¬Å"Wherein could this flea guilty be, except in that drop which it sucked from thee?â⬠What could the flea have done so badly, except sucking a little drop of blood from them? ââ¬Å"Yet thou triumphââ¬â¢st and sayst that thou/ Findââ¬â¢st not thy self, nor me the weaker now. The woman retaliates, celebrating her success in killing the flea, makes neither him, nor her any less noble. The writer responds, ââ¬Å"Tis true, then learn how false, fears be;â⬠it is true, and learn how false your fears are. False fears is an example of alliteration which highlights her concern about the losing her innocence. The writer closes with, ââ¬Å"Just so much honor, when you yieldââ¬â¢st to me. Will waste, as this fleaââ¬â¢s death took life from thee.â⬠When she surrenders to him, she will lose no more integrity than when she killed the flea. Yieldst is a small pun. The writer wants the woman to yield to his twisted rationality of his argument. He also wants her to yield to him sexually. He also uses a simile which associates the conservation of her own life when the flea dies to the conservation of her honor after she gives him what he wants. .

The First Job :: essays research papers
The First Day à à à à à On June 1, 2003 my thinking on life, changed a little bit. It happened to be a Sunday that I didnââ¬â¢t think I would be going to bed at 2:30 P.M. in order to go to work. I got under the cover of my bed and I was out like a light. Once I got into a very deep sleep it was hard to get out of it. I heard my alarm go off, and I didnââ¬â¢t want to get up, but I got up and started to get dressed. I went out in the kitchen and got something to eat and then packed my lunch for the night. à à à à à On the way to Van Wert, I was getting very intense. I started to get nervous about what I would be doing and who I would be working with. The closer I got to the factory the more nervous I got. Once I pulled into the parking lot and was shutting my car off, I realized that this isnââ¬â¢t a place I would like to work at all of my life. à à à à à Then I was walking into the factory and got clocked in and realized what I was in for. The presses were pounding away on the big coils of steel; the air had a humid musty smell that was going to get to me over time. I went into the break room and put my lunch box in the refrigerator. I walked nervously to meet my foreman and he gave me something to do. I was running a 400 degree rubber injection press the first part of the night. à à à à à At about 2:00 A.M. the bell rang for the first break. I was happy to here that because I needed a break to get something to drink. I sat down in the break room and sweat was still running down my face. As I was starring up at the TV I thought to myself, ââ¬Å"this is going to be a long summer.â⬠After the ten minute break was over, I walked back out to the press I was running and put on my soaked sleeves and gloves. When I was getting ready to start my press up my foreman came over to me and told me to come with him. All the while I was thinking in my head where is he taking me? What am I going to be doing now?

Fictional Research About CCTV Cameras Essay
This report evaluates the social impact of the installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV from now on) cameras in our neighbourhood. These cameras have been placed by the local government with the intention of lowering crime rates. Participants filled a questionnaire, and this report is based on their feedback. Positive effects Itââ¬â¢s been a month since the installation of the cameras, and they have already paid off as a great discouraging system. Misdemeanours such as hold-ups have lowered by 25%, whereas sexual assaults have lowered by an astounding 78%. People say that they feel safer and protected now. Negative effects However (and paradoxically), people donââ¬â¢t want to be observed 24/7 by the government. 75% of the population feel mildly uncomfortable about being watched all day, but think that this is still a good measure, while another 10% do not agree at all with this system. Among the people who donââ¬â¢t care about the constant surveillance, 2/3 are the elderly people (60+ years old). On the other hand, the most reluctant people to the CCTV camera system are between 15 and 25 years old, about the 64% of them. This group has protested against the system, even resorting to vandalize and destroy the cameras. Conclusions Most people in the area think of the CCTV cameras as a necessary evil, and think that their children are now able to go out without the fear of being assaulted, of something even worse. Most of them donââ¬â¢t like being observed, specially young people, but only a few are really upset about this fact. Recommendations The best solution, given the local response (and the fact that the area was conflictive enough to force the administration to install the cameras), would be for the government to send more police to the area, both to protect the cameras and to enforce local laws. This should lead to a further lowering of crime rates.

How to Print an Array in PHP Using Print_r()
How to Print an Array in PHP Using Print_r() An array in PHP computer programming contains a group of similar objects that are the same type and size. The array can contain integers, characters, or anything else with a defined data type. The print_r PHP function is used to return an array in a human readable form. It is written as: print_r($your_array) In this example, an array is defined and printed. The tag pre indicates the following code is preformatted text. This tag causes the text to be displayed in a fixed-width font. It preserves line breaks and spaces, making it easier for the human observer to read. pre?php $Names array (a Angela, b Bradley, c array (Cade, Caleb)); print_r ($Names); ? /pre When the code is run, the results looks like this: Array([a] Angela[b] Bradley[c] Array([0] Cade[1] Caleb)) Variations of Print_r You can store the result of print_r in a variable with a second parameter to print_r. This technique prevents any output from the function. Augment the function of print_r with var_dump and var_export to show protected and private properties of the objects, including type and value. The difference of the two is that var_export returns valid PHP code, whereas var_dump does not. Uses for PHP PHP is a server-side language used to add enhanced featuresà to a website developed in HTML, such as surveys, shopping carts, login boxes, and CAPTCHA codes. You can use it to build an online community, integrate Facebook with your website, and generate PDF files. With PHPs file-handling functions, you can create photo galleries and you can use the GD library included with PHP to generate thumbnail images, add watermarks, and resize and crop images. If you host banner ads on your website, PHP rotates them at random.à The same feature can be used to rotate quotations. It is easy to set up page redirects using PHP and if you are wondering how often your visitors check out your website, use PHP to set up a counter.
